Wired for companionship: a meta-analysis on social robots filling the void of loneliness in later life

abstract
AbstractBackground and objectivesLoneliness is a significant public health concern affecting over a quarter of older adults worldwide. Emerging research suggests that artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled social robots may offer a viable alternative for providing a new form of social support and reducing loneliness. This meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of AI-enabled social robots in reducing loneliness among older adults and examines the conditions under which these interventions are most effective.Research Design and MethodsA systematic search was conducted through October 2024. Effect sizes from 19 studies (N = 1,083) were synthesized using robust variance estimation (RVE) in meta-regression. Moderation analyses examined how social robots’ effectiveness differs by contextual factors such as participants’ backgrounds and studies’ characteristics.ResultsOur findings indicated that social robots significantly reduced loneliness among older adults. However, studies with control groups indicate a higher effect size. Moreover, greater reductions in loneliness are observed among individuals in institutional settings compared to those living independently. In addition, stronger intervention effects reported in Japan and Turkey than in the United States. However, age, cognitive status, robot type, duration of intervention, and year of publication did not significantly influence intervention effectiveness.Discussion and ImplicationsFindings underscore the potential of social robots as an effective and scalable approach for addressing loneliness among older adults, particularly within institutional care environments. Policymakers, gerontologists, and care providers should consider integrating AI-enabled social robots into existing care frameworks, emphasizing culturally sensitive and inclusive implementation strategies.

A systematic search was conducted through October 2024. Effect sizes from 19 studies (N = 1,083) were synthesized using robust variance estimation (RVE) in meta-regression.
The limitations section reports publication bias and concentration of studies in high-income countries, warning of potential overestimation and limited generalizability.
Institutional and independently living samples differed in the pooled moderator analysis; robot type and intervention duration were not statistically significant moderators. This is not an equivalence test of simple and complex robots.

abstract
AbstractIntroductionSocial robots are increasingly introduced into homes as short-term educational or entertainment tools for children. However, their physical presence and social roles may persist long after their intended use has ended. This study explores how families continue to engage with a child-focused educational robot years after its original deployment.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective follow-up study with 19 families who participated in a 2021 in-home deployment of a reading companion robot for preschool-aged children. In 2025, we revisited these families through in-depth interviews to investigate how the robot had been integrated, re-purposed, or preserved over time.ResultsDespite the children outgrowing the robot’s instructional content, 18 families had retained the robot. Families described transitions in its role—from an educational device to a symbolic household member—characterized by emotional attachment, care-taking behaviors, and affection. The robot was re-framed as a memory object, integrated into new routines, or passed on ceremonially, akin to a “retirement.”DiscussionOur findings reveal three key themes explaining the robot’s enduring presence: (1) emotional attachment and personification, (2) symbolic and nostalgic value, and (3) practical re-purposing within household routines. This study contributes to long-term human—robot interaction literature by extending domestication theory and emphasizing the importance of designing for the full life cycle of social robots—including end-of-life transitions. It underscores how social robots can become meaningful companions and enduring artifacts of family identity, long after their functional use has ended. Keywords: long-term HRI, child-robot attachment, robot domestication, robot afterlife, home robot

A retrospective follow-up in 2025 interviewed 19 of the 20 families from an original 2021 deployment with children aged 3–6 in the Greater Toronto Area. The children were aged 7–10 at follow-up.
18 families retained the robot; 12 described emotional attachment/personification. Retention included symbolic or nostalgic roles after instructional content was outgrown.
The authors explicitly state that trajectories were based on one retrospective follow-up and participant recollection, not observed four-year longitudinal usage data.
“It’s always happy to see me”: Exploring LOVOT robots as companions for older adults

abstract
AbstractBackgroundAI-enabled social robots present the potential to resolve the loneliness and social isolation of older adults in long-term care (LTC). There is limited research on how older adults perceive and make sense of these robots and how human-robot companionship is formed. This study investigated older adults’ experiences using LOVOT, a social robot.MethodsUsing an ethnographic study design, we introduced LOVOT robots to a Canadian LTC home for four weekly interaction sessions. Thirty-six residents, seven family members and two healthcare staff participated. Data collection involved observational field notes and conversational interviews. The analysis was guided by ikigai, a Japanese well-being concept.FindingsReflexive thematic analysis identified four key themes. 1) Joy: The robot offers joy and excitement through interactions. 2) Acceptance: For older adults with mobility or cognitive impairments, LOVOT gives consistent positive responses, offering a sense of unconditional acceptance. 3) Creativity: The robot’s non-verbal communication allows older adults to grow creative imagination, encouraging personal expression and expanding interaction possibilities. 4) “Not for me”: Not all participants like the LOVOT robot.ConclusionAI-enabled social robots show potential in supporting the psychosocial needs of older adults, which have broader implications for LTC practices and future research directions. Future research should further explore the creative utility of social robots among LTC residents. Keywords: Artificial intelligence, robots, social companion, older adults, long-term care

Thirty-six residents, seven family members and two healthcare staff participated in one Canadian long-term-care home; the study used four weekly interaction sessions, each normally 30–45 minutes.
The “Not for me” theme includes visual/auditory limitations, difficulty picking up the robot, weight, overexcitement, lack of interest in pets, and privacy concerns.
The procedure states cameras were disabled and the robots were not connected to the Internet during the study. Family members and staff helped residents engage and interpret reactions.
Draws smoothly animated robot eyes on OLED displays, using the Adafruit GFX library. Robot eye shapes are configurable in terms of width, height, border radius and space between. Several different mood expressions (happy, tired, angry, default) and animations (autoblinker, idle, laughing, confused) are available. All state changes have smooth transitions and thus, complex animation sequences are easily feasible.
Developing this library was the first step of a larger project: the creation of my own DIY robot from the design perspective. Check out the [FluxGarage Youtube Channel](https://www.youtube.com/@FluxGarage).

OM1 was originally built in Python, and the Go runtime is a newer, performance-focused implementation. We migrated to Go for lower latency, better performance, efficient concurrency, a smaller memory footprint for edge devices, and simpler deployment as a single Go binary (with the Zenoh C library bundled alongside it).
The Go runtime covers the core agent pipeline, but several capabilities available in the Python runtime are still under active development. For most new development we recommend the Go runtime.
